Sanborn Maps can be accessed for free by anyone who has a card with San Francisco Public Library and some other library systems. They have very detailed information on how buildings were used in the past including the types of businesses at many urban locations. They're an excellent tool for historical research and a wonderful way to indulge in low-risk, time travel.
