The Grateful Dead: Then and Now on ZOOM

Of the many bands to emerge from San Francisco’s Summer of Love, the one with the biggest following today is undoubtedly The Grateful Dead. Though Jefferson Airplane made the biggest splash in 1967, the longevity of The Dead and their extraordinary run of more than 2,300 live shows enabled them to attract a multi-generational following.

We’ll talk about the band’s evolution and the unique subculture that came to surround it. We’ll see video clips of them playing in San Francisco venues, including Winterland, where they were known as the unofficial house band. And we’ll discuss some of the rituals they developed and the ways their deeply dedicated fans continue these traditions to this day.

Rodney Paul has been leading walking tours in the Haight Ashbury for SF City Guides since 2015. This event is adapted from a series of musical programs he created to celebrate the Summer of Love 50th anniversary three years ago.

The Zoom link will be sent to participants after the free registration on Eventbright.
