Modern art has enjoyed exponential growth in popularity over the past few decades, yet many people still find it challenging, perplexing or even unfathomable. Anna Ewins will join local museum guide Rodney Paul to discuss how and when art became “modern” or “contemporary”– shifting from portraying historical events, religious scenes, landscapes and portraits to works that puzzle many of us and challenge concepts of beauty and sensory pleasure.
She will explore how modern art can invite us to contemplate the world we live in and the issues we face. It can prick our social conscience and at times delight and amuse us. In many ways, art, like philosophy, can help us understand how we perceive our world and bring meaning to it.
